Yarn, while a wonderful thing, can get pretty expensive. Expecially since (as a girl with a five-dollar-a-week allowence) my budget is rather on the small side. I’m sure I’m not the only person with this problem, so hopefully this page will help teens like me with big knitting ambitions but small budgets find good deals on yarn.
So, here’s the deal. This page will have lists of yarn that is nice to work with and isn’t a rip off. You will find the following information:
Yarn Name
Fiber Content
Yardage per Ball
Price per Ball
Price Per Yard
Description of Yarn
For example:
Name: Oakfiber’s Alpagora
Fiber Content: 60% Alpaca 30% Angora 10% Nylon
Yardage: 100 yards
Price Per Ball: $10
Price Per Yard: $0.10
Description of Yarn: This yarn is angelically fuzzy and soft. I tried to knit something with it, but I kept wanting to just rub the ball of yarn against my cheek instead. It comes in sixteen beautiful, rich colors. I chose a vivid blue for my project.
The yarns are sorted by Yarn Weight Category (Guide to this system here)
Fingering, or 1
Sports, or 2
DK, or 3
Worsted, or 4
Name: Catalina
Fiber Content: 70% Baby Alpaca, 30% Silk
Yardage: 218
Price per skein: $11.99
Price per yard: $0.055
Description of Yarn: I (Lily) LOVE IT!!!!!! Okay, so . . . It is very soft and nice. It doesn’t fall apart on you. Getting it wound into a ball makes you fill with joy. Fluffing the ball is a pleasure. The end product is bound to be lovely (unless your ex-puppy chews it up!!!
) I made these lovely “fetching” handwarmers out of mine. Also, it doesn’t really felt. See, I was a bad Lily, and let one of them run through the wash (ask bronach for the gory details) and it came out just a bit smaller, which was actually nice because they had been a bit baggy.
The details, they are gory.

So . . . Yeah. If you’re in the mood to splurge, this yarn ROCKS.
~Lily
I think Baby Silk is fab, but it’s not vegetarian (silk worms are killed to make it). There is also a cotton/alpaca and pure alpaca version of this yarn for us vegetarians!
-Bronach
Name: Patons Classic Wool Merino
Fiber Content: 100% Wool
Yardage: 223 yds
Price per Ball: $5.00
Price Per Yard: $0.02
Description of Yarn: I love this yarn for several reasons. It’s all wool, it’s pretty soft, it felts, it’s dirt cheap, and you can get it at your Craft Megamart any time. It comes in a billion colors and is a good yarn to stock up on.
-Bronach
Name: Plymouth Suri Merino
Fiber Content: 60% Alpaca 30% Angora 10% Nylon
Yardage: 110 yards
Price Per Ball: $6.50, according to the website. However, I got it for $5 a ball at a LYS.
Price Per Yard: $0.06
Description of Yarn: This yarn is springy, soft, and warm. It comes in 17 good, basic colors, so you’ll probably be able to find one that’s good for you. It gets sort of fuzzy after wearing whatever you make out of it for a while, but it’s worth it. This is the sort of yarn that you could buy several balls of just to keep in your stash in case you feel the need to make something comforting and lucious. At a gauge of 4 stitches per inch (which is a little loser than the recommended gauge) I was able to just barely make a hat with only a yarn to spare.

Yarn Hall of Shame
Don’t knit with this yarn. EVER
The obvious Red Heart Supersaver. *shudder* Do you know how much of this crap is sitting in my closet at home?!?!?
~Lily
The only known good uses for Red Heart Super Saver are:
-Gag reflex trigger
-Straight Jacket
-Tire Cozy
-Repulsive Knitted Headbands for beginners
-Scarves for unwanted sibblings (Lily has been known to do this)
-Scourges
And that’s all folks!!!
~Lily and Bronach
Homespun looks deceptively soft and lovely. When you start knitting with it, your hands will slowly start to cramp up and the yarn begins to feel gritty and grimy. The yarn will fray and pill. Your stitches will be distorted from their normal shape into loose, baggy loops. Look here to see how LION BRAND describes it. It cracks us up. “Soft, Silky and Beautiful.” Right.
Uses:
- Burns well (beware of stench)
- um . . .
-well . . .
- I guess you could . . . um . . . Face it, it’s useless.
- Mainly Bronach
More to come . . . The horror!!!
Most of these attractive yarns can be found at your local Hobby Lobby!
